“It has been an exciting and noisy start to the new year at Yanwath School, near Penrith, with a visit from Carlisle-based sound artist Ben Gates.

Ben, who creates interactive sound sculptures, spent two days at the school inspiring the children from reception to year six to explore and create sounds.

His workshops enabled the children to not only learn how things make sound and how to invent their own rhythms but also key life skills such as working in a team, listening and communicating. A group of eight children who are working towards their arts award discover and explore qualifications were also able to work with Ben on designing their own soundsculptures they would like to develop for the school grounds.

The two-day workshop culminated in an inspiring performance by children from across the school greeted by applause from classmates, teachers and parents alike.”
